Uncharted is from the same studio that made those odd, but very fun games Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot. It's serves as a fairly large departure from their other, more family friendly titles, but the studio's trade mark polish and style somehow remains in tact, despite the more gritty game world they paint for us. Graphics wise, this game is very, very nice. You'll see plenty nice effects, and often wish you could visit some of the games locations for yourself. The water in particular, was really well done in certain places. Although the tiling on the ocean was quit dramatic. Lets stretch those normals a bit, boys! Character animations were PHENOMENAL, easily some of the best I've ever seen in a game.
Uncharted is, for all intents and purposes, a fun popcorn movie that you just so happen to play. One part Tomb-Raider, one part Gears of War, twisted together with an Indiana Jones style drop of "camp juice" to form one fantastic gaming martini. The character moves where you point him, and the camera never sucks bad enough to get fustrating like the games it borrows so heavily from. Good to see they only took the best bits, and left the crud behind. I could have used a bit more pure exploration, and a bit less gun fighting, but all in all, it was a pretty good mix. The vehicular segments were not horrible, but wouldn't have been missed. If I were in charge, I would have doubled the length of the river and dropped the city run with the jet-ski. The jeep sequence was VERY well done, I just wish it would have happened sooner, to shake things up.
The story is where this game really shines. Okay, it's campy as hell, but if they would have called this Indy 4, we would have cheered and thanked the gods for their wisdom. Rather than being a great story, it just happens to be very well told. It's got everything you could ask for: Spanish Gold, Ancient Temples, Modern Pirates, rival treasure hunters, and yes, even the damn Nazi make their way in somehow. As always, the chick is slap-a-hoe worthy, but your pal Sully is pretty bad ass and more than makes up for her whiny punk-ass. They totally had the right idea ditching her in the first five minutes. TOTALLY.
The final boss fight went very much against the grain of the rest of the game, and left me fairly baffled. Why not use those awesome platforming mechanics in a radical way, rather than just mindless shooting at thugs. I'm looking at you helicopter sequence. (That so should have been game play, rather than Machinima)
But like any great martini, it doesn't last very long, and your left wanting just one more. Sadly, there is no replay value whatsoever. Even a basic multi-player vs mode would have been welcome, while Full on co-op would be freaking sweet. Short, sweet, and very well worth the rent. A part 2 is in the works according to Wiki, and if they improve on their few weakness, it should prove to be a most excellent game for any PS3 owners collection.
